Running the AT&T USBConnect Quicksilver Modem semi-natively under OSX
I recently acquired a USB 3G modem from AT&T, in the hopes that it would allow me to work pretty much anywhere with minimal fuss. Now that I’m officially freelancing I’m dying to get out of the house, but don’t want to have to worry about where I’m going to be able to find WiFi.
In any case, I naively assumed that it would all be wine and roses, everything would work perfectly, and I would be able to easily do seemingly simple things like sharing my sweet new 3G connection over Airport with anyone else who happened to be working in my general vicinity. Upon eagerly tearing open the modem packaging and plugging it in though, I discovered pretty quickly that this sh*t is UGLY.
First of all, I couldn’t just plug in and get going. The Mac drivers for this thing aren’t part of OSX, and AT&T didn’t even bother to include them in the modem package. I had to go to some third party website and download them (support.option.com/att.) At least they took the time to write that in tiny type on page 30 of the manual.
Secondly, the third party application added a whole bunch of ugly, seemingly unnecessary network interfaces, and REMOVED all my EXISTING network interfaces. Clearly this wasn’t going to work. Not only could I not share my 3G connection with any other interface (since they’d all been disappeared,) but I couldn’t use any of my other interfaces at all until I disconnected the 3G.
[On a side note: googling the problem has indicated that this is also a major problem for Parallels and VMWare installs, which rely on adding network interfaces to get access to the host connection. Disappearing them all means that the guest OS can’t access the 3G connection.]
But enough about the problem. Here’s my solution. Basically an updated version of the solution found here: Imperfect Workaround.
This works with the AT&T USBConnect Quicksilver Modem with DataConnect package, and Leopard (OS 10.5) on a Macbook Air.
- Install GlobeTrotter software as indicated by Quicksilver manual (Download from support.option.com/att — download link is tiny somewhere in the middle of that big blank page.)
- Plug in card and run GlobeTrotter Connect
- Connect and ensure your card is working this way
- Disconnect and quit GlobeTrotter Connect
- Open System Preferences, and click on “Network” (Choose “Edit Locations” in the Location dropdown menu, then choose “GlobeTrotter Connect” and click the “-” button.)
- Delete the “GlobeTrotter Connect” location
- Delete all of the weird network interfaces that GlobeTrotter has added (mine were called something like ‘Icon 322 Modem,’ ‘Icon 322 Diag’ etc.)
- Hit the ‘+’ button at the bottom of the interface list
- Choose Interface: Icon322 Control. Call it whatever you want (mine is called ‘Evil 3G Control’)
- In the right-hand pane, enter this information:
- Configuration: Default
- Telephone Number: ISP.CINGULAR
- Account Name: ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM
- Password: CINGULAR1
- Click the “Advanced” button.
- In the “Modem” tab, choose:
- Vendor: Other
- Model: Option GlobeTrotter 3G
- Leave everything else as-is, and click OK
- Click Apply, the click Connect.
This should get you connected. I have found it to be very slightly tempermental, but not too bad. I’m not sure what will happen if you uninstall the GlobeTrotter application — if you try this, let me know what happens!
Leave me a comment if you got this to work, or had problems with it!
Nice post. Thank you for the info. Keep it up.
Wow, this post was a life saver. I just got my quicksilver and I couldn’t connect to anything. AT&T didn’t include any connection credentials with the modem. Hah! Until now I’ve only been able to find the older Edge connection credentials, and they weren’t working for me.
Glad I stumbled across this. You’d think they might include this information with the modem.
Thank you! Been trying to connect for a week. Three tiers of tech support twice, 3 att stores, countless web sites. Thank you for posting this!
I have a att usbconnect quicksilver and I am following your instructions but after step 6 I am completely lost I cannot find anything you are referring to. I am using Windows xp on a toshiba tecra a8. Can you please help me, I cannot connect this card at all.
Hi Lakeisha — I clarified a little bit, I think. Click on the “Network” button in System Preferences, then click on the “Location” dropdown and click “Edit Locations” to remove the GlobeTrotter Connect location.
Oh, hang on. These instructions are for a Mac computer. Not for Windows. Under Windows you should just use the software and instructions that came with the modem!!
no software came with this card, i am using the at&t ubsconnect quicksilver card. It only came by itself. DO i need to download the gt software? After that then what/
What modem are you referring to?
Had the exact same problem; but just put the APN, username and password you provided in the preferences in GlobeTrotter Connect software and hit connect and away it went. When disconnected, everything was back to usual; when I installed it created a new network location called globe trotter that had the cellular items, nothing else. Working like a champ. So saves a lot of steps and deleting etc…. Too bad support didn’t just give you the APN, username and password and tell you to put in the preferences and it should work fine. Thanks for the post and information; saved me any calls to AT&T support, that what I love about the internet.
Ah — yes, that’s true, unless you want to use any of your other connections WHILE using the modem connection. For instance, I really wanted to be able to share my modem connection via airport, so that whoever I’m sitting with can be online as well.
Also I object as a general principle to having to use some rickety piece of third party software :)
Awesome. This still works exactly as written. Now I just need a method of tracking bytes transferred over a month.
Thank you!!! This worked like a charm. I’m positive you saved me hours of frustration trying to get this to work. ATT stores should print this out and include it with every Quicksilver modem they sell.
I recently purchased the AT&T USBConnect Quicksilver and couldnt get it to work on my MacBook Pro. I went through all the steps as described. I still canot get it to connect. AT&T Support did a troubleshooting ticket but said it would take 24-48 hours to fix. The error message I am getting when it tries to connect is A Modem Error Occured. Please verify your settings and try again.
Tried all the above suggestions, but still getting ‘no network connection established’. Do you have any further suggestions for me?
Very cool. Thanks for taking the arrows to figure this out. Now all I need to do is figure out how to get Airport turned back on!
THANK YOU!!!! This worked!
Another satisfied customer! I just picked up the Quicksilver tonight and am so glad I found this post. Thanks for the great write up.
When I purchased my Quicksilver card, the guy in the AT&T store initially said, “just plug it in and you’re ready to go.” Not so much. These instructions worked great! I also checked the “Show modem status in menu bar” option so I can just connect and disconnect from the menu bar without having to open network preferences every time. Anyone figure out a way to keep track of bandwidth usage yet?
Wow I really appreciate that passsword and user name. I have been trying to get this to work for two weeks, Im cant believe AT&T has such bad Tech support that they could not provide this simple solution. Thanks again everything is great now.
Thank you! I got the directions from the we browser on my Blackberry and had my MacBook Pro connected in no time at all!
Thank you for posting this article. I had no luck getting help from AT&T, Apple, and option. Your solution works pretty good on Mac Book Air and I now have Continuous connection.
Thanks again,
Kevin
Just picked up a Quicksilver modem and couldn’t get the Globetrotter software to work. Your solution worked right away. I cannot thank you enough! Can’t believe that AT&T can’t adopt this solution for themselves.
when i connect with this procedure i do not get 3g it seems. I did a speed test using this method and then using the globetrotter software and there is a 3 times slower speed difference. What is wrong?
Thank you!
You can track your usage in the ‘my account’ page at wireless.att.com, or in the ‘My Wireless’ AT&T app for the iPhone.
I use a Netgear MBR264GU with my mac. It’s less portable, but much easier. Nevertheless, I did follow these instructions on one of my laptops for train / plane trips where I want to carry less gear around.
